Firefox

Firefox is regarded as the best Web browser in terms of extensions (small add-ons which modify or add to existing functionality): it has hundreds of them, but which are the best? Based on Mozilla’s list of recommended extensions, and some other personal searches on the web, I have created a list of Firefox 2.0 best add-ons.

  • All-in-One Gestures: Allows you to execute common commands using mouse gestures, rocker navigation, scroll wheel navigation and page scrolling.
  • Better Gmail 2: A compilation of the best Greasemonkey enhancements for the NEW Gmail interface, compiled into one extension.
  • Clipmarks: Lets you save and share Web page content without having to bookmark the entire page. When you find something in a Web page that interests you—whether it’s a compelling paragraph, an interesting tidbit, or a cool image—you can clip and tag it. Very useful also for printing portions of pages: you can even merge portions of pages into one document and print it.
  • CustomizeGoogle: enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam). All features are optional and easily configured.
  • Dictionaries: These dictionaries work with the spell-checking feature in Firefox 2.
  • DownThemAll!: Features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time. It lets you download all the links or images contained in a web page and much more: you can refine your downloads by fully customizable criteria to get only what you really want.
  • FireFTP: FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers. Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SSL encryption, file hashing and more.
  • Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer: If you use Firefox on more than one computer, you’ll want Foxmarks. Install Foxmarks on each computer, and it will work silently in the background to keep your bookmarks synchronized. As a bonus, log in to http://my.foxmarks.com/ from any computer anywhere to access your bookmarks.
  • Full Fullscreen: Hides remaining toolbars that the normal fullscreen functionality does not. Hiding the tab bar, as well as starting up on fullscreen, are configurable from the settings dialog.
  • Link Alert: Changes the cursor icon to indicate the target of a link.
  • NoScript: Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content only for trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site.
  • PDF Download: Allows to choose if you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML), if you want to view it outside Firefox with your default or custom PDF reader, or if you want to download it! (You may disable PDF opening inside the browser going in Acrobat Reader -> Edit -> Preferences -> Internet, and unchecking “Display PDF in Browser”).
  • PicLens: transforms your browser into a visually stunning experience for enjoying photos and videos across the web. Its interactive “3D Wall” lets you effortlessly search and zoom images and YouTube videos faster and more immersively than ever before.
  • Undo Closed Tabs Button: allows to undo closed tabs via a toolbar and/or tab bar button or the right-click context menu.
